Face Freeze
Original air date: 7/21/2012 (produced in 2011)
SpongeBob and Patrick's bet to see who can hold a funny face the longest ends with their faces freezing that way.
"Face Freeze" contains examples of:
- An Aesop: Always heed someone's wise advice so you don't suffer a problem yourself.
- Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: After Mr. Krabs gives his warning, SpongeBob and Patrick struggle to keep their faces straight as long as possible. Given their extreme idiocy and stupidity, trying to resist this habit seems excessively difficult, and it isn't long until they go right back to making faces again.
- "Everybody Laughs" Ending: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs laugh at Squidward for getting his face frozen, which he doesn't like.
- Four Is Death: Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob and Patrick a story of a man who stuck his tongue out at people 444 times, which prevented him from putting it back in. The number also foreshadows how grotesque the episode becomes.
- From Bad to Worse: Sandy tries to straighten out SpongeBob and Patrick's frozen faces, but they turn out to be more hideous than before.
- Frozen Face: The episode is about SpongeBob and Patrick making ridiculous faces for so long, they get stuck with horrifying faces.
- Irony: Mr. Krabs warns SpongeBob and Patrick about the face freeze, and when he learned they ignored him, he was so angry that he gets a face freeze himself.
- Laser-Guided Karma:
- SpongeBob and Patrick receive this when their faces freeze because they disobeyed Mr. Krab's warning.
- Squidward then receives this towards the end of the episode when he laughs at SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs' frozen faces, with his face also freezing.
- Nightmare Face: This episode is dedicated to this trope, with the ending being no exception.
- No Ending: The episode ends with everyone's faces frozen with no explanation of how they returned to normal before the next episode.
- Oh, Crap!: Both SpongeBob and Patrick are undeniably shocked when they wake up after holding their faces all night long and can't move them at all, meaning they got the face freeze and Mr. Krabs was right.
- Rage-Breaking Point: When Mr. Krabs sees SpongeBob and Patrick's frozen faces meaning they disobeyed his warning, he blows his top.
- Shout-Out: One of the ones Patrick chose to make is a pink monstrosity with square ears, a pointed head, a menacing grin, and sunken-in black eyes.
Glove World R.I.P.
Original air date: 4/3/2012 (produced in 2011)
SpongeBob and Patrick spend one last day at Glove World before it closes for good.
"Glove World R.I.P." contains examples of the following tropes:
- An Aesop: You can't stop something from ending. When something ends, something new may begin soon.
- Big "NO!": SpongeBob and Patrick do this twice when they learn that Glove World is closing forever.
- End of an Age: Glove World is shut down and a new park, Glove Universe, opens in its place.
- Failed a Spot Check: After chaining themselves to the Glove World entrance, SpongeBob and Patrick fail to see the opening of Glove Universe right in front of them until it's pointed out.
- Four Is Death: This was only the fourth time Glove World was seen, and is shutting down forever.
- Hurricane of Puns: After the Glove World owner gives Patrick his hat to wear when the latter shows up with no pants, SpongeBob and Patrick unleash a slur of glove related puns.
SpongeBob: Ooh, that looks Glovey on you, Patrick.
Patrick: It fits like a glove.
SpongeBob: Glove size fits all.
Patrick: A penny saved is a penny gloved!
SpongeBob: You can lead a glove to glove, but you can't make it glove.
Patrick: She gloves me, she gloves me not.
SpongeBob: All's fair in glove and war.
Patrick: Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove! Glove.
- Literal-Minded: When SpongeBob and Patrick are upset over all the attractions falling apart which lead to Glove World closing, SpongeBob pickets, "Look around you! Open your eyes!" Patrick then literally opens his eyes, leading to a montage of all the attractions failing.
- Negative Continuity: Despite Glove World closing down and being replaced by Glove Universe, it is shown operational in later episodes.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: SpongeBob and Patrick do everything they can to save the Glove World amusement park from being torn down, only for it to be pointless as the reason for the demolition is that Glove Universe, which is bigger and better, was opening just across from it. Not to mention that by the time they had found out about this they had already chaining themselves to the Glove World gates. That they can't even go see the new amusement park because Patrick threw the key in a swamp.
- Shout-Out: The Glove Boat is a reference to The Love Boat.
